STARS FIND IT TOUGH GOING IN CANADA
January 1st, 2009 Las Vegas, NV - The Nevada Stars sent both their 18AAA and 16AAA team to Canada this last week to compete in the Richmond International Tournament. The 18AAA's got off to a good start with two opening wins against Surry and San Jose 16AAA teams. They then suffered a loss at the hands of the Alaska All-stars and tied the San Jose Sharks 18AAA team in the round robin rounds. The 18AAA's faced the Wave 18AAA team in the quarter finals and all but forgot to show up in a 7-1 defeat. Coaches agreed that this was by far their worst effort of the season. The 18's finished up with a 2-2-1 record. The 16AAA played five games against mostly older AAA teams and could only manage a tie. It should be also noted that the 16's are missing their captain Benny Barker and a couple of other key players. Next tournament for the Stars is a trip by both teams to the Dallas Cup at the end of the month. Both teams plan on picking up some games during the month. The 18's are tentatively scheduled to play UNLV in a two game series over MLK weekend.

Las Vegas investor makes offer for Event Center

KEARNEY - A new buyer has emerged in discussions involving the sale of Kearney’s FirsTier Event Center and Tri-City Storm Hockey team. Las Vegas businessman Kirk Brooks signed a letter of intent late last week to purchase the Event Center and hockey team from owner Joel Wiens, Brooks told the Hub today.
As a result, the city of Kearney has withdrawn its purchase offer and will no longer be involved in negotiations to buy the 5,000-seat arena.
“The city has always been interested in having private ownership of the Event Center,” said City Manager Mike Morgan. “Now that a private owner has stepped forward, the city feels it is appropriate to withdraw its offer and allow new negotiations to take place.”
Brooks lives in Las Vegas, where he owns and operates the Las Vegas Ice Center, a 500-seat hockey facility that caters to youth hockey, public skating and other events. He also owns the Nevada Stars AAA hockey teams that feature 18- and 16-year-old players.
Brooks’ career includes 10 years of work as a race and sports book director for hotels and casinos in Nevada.
“I don’t want to speak too soon and say too much too fast,” Brooks said, “but we are moving at warp speed.
“We are moving as fast as possible, and hopefully a deal will be done within the next 30 days,” he said.
The United States Hockey League still must approve the Storm’s sale to Brooks.
“The deal is not finalized. But I feel confident with where things are at today,” Brooks said. “Kearney is a great community that deserves to have a great hockey team. I want to be the guy who rebuilds the organization and brings it back to the way fans remember it early on.”
Brooks said he is aware of the hockey team’s past success.
“I know what kind of support this team has had and what you used to draw there,” he said. “I think we can bring some of that excitement back.
“The USHL is the top class of major junior hockey in the United States, and I’m one of those guys who always goes after the best,” said Brooks. “I like to control my own destiny, and if you don’t own the facility and the team that plays there, you can get into situations where you cannot bring the team any further.”
The city of Kearney has been in negotiations with Wiens for months and intended to purchase the FirsTier Event Center using funds from a new restaurant tax it planned to implement. The city was prepared to pay between $2 million and $3 million in a deal that would have included the Event Center but not the team.
Morgan said the restaurant tax would not be implemented since the city is no longer involved in the Event Center negotiations.
Wiens - a Cheyenne, Wyo., banker - acquired the arena in 2004 for $3 million at a public auction in foreclosure proceedings. The facility was built in 2000 for $10.5 million and today has an assessed value of $3.5 million.
A record 315,273 people attended hockey games and other events at the Event Center in 2008, breaking the record of 305,798 set in 2006.

Bolton rolls dice on puck career
Las Vegas product uses connections to hook up with Oceanside squad
Brad Bird, Oceanside Star
Published: Thursday, October 02, 2008
Better known for Celine Dion than Marcel Dionne, Las Vegas isn't exactly a hockey hotbed. But Steven Bolton isn't letting that stop him. The 18-year-old net minder was raised in Vegas and played his minor hockey there. Now he's up with the Oceanside Generals of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League and is happy to be here.
In hockey, as in life, it's all about connections, and his goalie coach in Vegas was Pokey Reddick, who played 132 games in the NHL, mostly with the Winnipeg Jets. Reddick also played junior with Dave Johnston, the Generals' head coach. Reddick phoned Johnston one day and said he had a prospect who needed Canadian ice time, and Johnston was in the market for such a player.
Now he's got three solid goalies in Bolton, Justin Borsa and local product Stephen Wolff. "He's doing all right," Johnston said of Bolton on Saturday during first period action against the Campbell River Storm. "He's a good-sized kid. Very committed." It's early, but after two starts Bolton was leading the VIJHL with a goals against average of 1.88 and a save percentage of 91.55. (Number two in the league was Borsa, with stats of 2.83 and 87.50.) Bolton admits he gets kidded a lot, coming from the desert, and neither of his parents played hockey (mom's a teacher, dad's a maintenance man), so what's the story?
He started playing road hockey as a boy, and to be different from his brother put on the pads one day and stood between the pipes. He loved it. "Mom said: 'If you want to go pro in hockey you've got to play ice hockey.'" So he did, against midget teams from Chicago and California, working his way up. He's here with his eye on the B.C. Hockey League, hoping to get called up this year or next. He wants to win a scholarship at an American NCAA school. How does the play in Canada compared to the United States? Faster-paced, he said. "And there's a lot of traffic in front of the net." Nerves don't seem to be a problem. He consented to an interview 25 minutes before game time Saturday, calm and well-spoken. "I think we've got the best defense in the league. We have a great team," he said, though that wasn't on view Saturday night, when they lost 4-1 to Campbell River. The Generals stand 5-4 on the season with two weekend losses. Assistant coach Jason Dubyna likes what he's seen of the young goalie, however. "He's been awesome," he said Saturday. "Right now he's leading the league in goalie stats. And he's a great personality with his teammates."
Goalie coach Darryl Humphrey of the visiting Storm coached midget and knows about minor hockey in Vegas. "There's actually pretty good hockey down there," he said. "There's a lot of good coaches who have moved down there to start coaching." Coming to Canada to play makes a lot of sense not only because the hockey is better, but so is the visibility, Humphrey said. He added there are a lot more scouts in Canada -- "just more exposure." So, is the NHL in Bolton's sights? He says it is. "I just want to take it one step at a time." The Generals are in Campbell River Friday night for a rematch against the Storm. You can hear the game on The Beach 88.5 FM, with play-by-play man Ian Holmes. Saturday at Oceanside Place the Generals host the Victoria Cougars. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m.

Stars Lose Close One
September 20,2008 Blaine, MN - The Nevada Stars reached the quarter finals of the NAHL Showcase only to lose a close one to Team Illinios 6-5. The Stars came out on fire and had a 5-2 lead at the break before they ran into penalty trouble at the nine minute mark of the second half. At the nine minute mark Christian Bryan was assessed a five minute major penalty for boarding . To add insult to injury the Stars received two more penalties during the five minutes to give Team Illinios almost four minutes of five on three. The results were devastating as Team Illinios scored four goals during these penalties to take a 6-5 lead. The bright point of the game was that Team Illinios didn't score a single five on five goal. Other than the penalties the coaching staff was pleased with the Stars performance considering they lost Kenny Brooks early in the game and Sonny Zuloaga didn't make the trip. Scoring for the Stars were Nick Scheafer, Vincent Ciaglo, Matt Hedderly, Sean Muller and Kris Carter. Nick Scheafer was the star player of the weekend scoring six goals!

UNLV Returns Favor Beat Stars 9-4
Saturday September 13, 2008 Las Vegas, NV - Josh Jasek showed the NV Stars what a division one player looks like in an indescribable effort Saturday at Sobe Ice Areana. Jasek finished with three goals and three assist to lead UNLV to a 9-4 victory. The Stars used Saturday night much like the Rebels did Friday to look at a few different players at different positions. Sonny Zuloaga arguably one of the Stars best defenseman was a little banged up and did not play. Stars coach Pokey Reddick looking forward to a big weekend in Minnesota next week didn’t want to take any chances on his health. “This was a great tune-up for the Stars and we look forward to more series with the Rebels throughout the year”. Scoring for the Stars were Nick Scheafer, Matt Hedderly, Derek Sutliffe, and Kenny Brooks. Picking up assist were Sutliffe, Brooks and Muller.

Stars Victorious Over UNLV 7 -3
September 12,2008 Las Vegas, NV - The Nevada Stars Midget 18 AAA team defeated the UNLV Rebels in front of a capacity crowd at Las Vegas Ice Center 7 -3. The Rebels were using the game as a gauge to decide who to keep and did not dress some of their best defensemen as they still have cuts to make. The Rebels started off strong and caught the Stars by surprise and had them running around in their defensive zone in the first period. Matt Hedderly started off the scoring finishing on a beautiful setup from Aaron Combs and Kenny Brooks. Josh Jasek scored on a tremendous slap shot from the right side to tie the score. The first period ended 2 -1 in favor of the Rebels.
The tide started to turn in the second period when the Stars started to settle down and scored the only two goals of the period. Sean Muller scored with assist going to Brooks and Zucker. Shortly thereafter Kenny Brooks scored a shorthanded goal with a tremendous setup by Muller. The third period was all Stars as they scored on goals from Aaron Combs, Kenny Brooks, Adam Zucker and Nick Scheafer. Picking up assist in the third period for the Stars were Dmetri Culker and Hedderly with two and Sheafer and Bryan each with one. The Rebels Josh Jasek scored in the third period with a nifty shorthanded breakaway around Stars goaltender Mark Smith. The Rebels outshot the Stars 30 -25. Rematch tonight at the Sobe Ice Arena at 6pm.
